Video in Journalism

We've been talking about video, as it relates to the future of photojournalism, in many of my classes recently. I read an interesting blog entry a little bit ago about the status of still images as compared to video. I think video can be used very effectively in visual story telling, I also think that it has a long way to go. From the recent events at Virginia Tech, a lot of the video I've seen online has been rather weak, and is either modeled after audio slide shows, or cable news. The still images to come out of the same situations has been much more interesting, and used more appropriately.

thanks for sharing those images. i hadn't really gotten to see much other than the major media--those still images really capture the emotion of it all; i am proud of you for challenging yourself in a field that is so demanding, but so incredibly important. you guys are are the historians of our culture and our world.

only a few more weeks, bittersweet i am sure. i hope you are fantastic in that big city.

a lot of people think that video will replace still photography since you will soon be able to pull high quality stills from video. i disagree, except for maybe in the case of press conferences. shooting for video and shooting for stills are two completely different methods that produce different results and different effects on the viewer.
of course, i could always wind up shooting myself in the foot over this in five years (i pray not).
