A380 again

Well i finally was able to watch the Washingtonpost.com's video about the airbus A380. I'm seriously disappointed. Their video was a poor use of the medium. I got the same perspective from reading the facts about the airplane on the Airbus website.

Watching the video, I certainly couldn't tell it was the largest commercial airplane ever built.

Ride Along

I spent the majority of the day today up on the hill shadowing Chip Somodevilla, and Alex Wong for my professional practices class. It was really interesting to watch both men work. They were both very helpful, and welcomed me with open arms. I've shot up on the hill a bunch of times before, but it was a different experience entirely shooting with people who do it every day, for a wire service. I was impressed by how well they knew their subjects, and knew exactly what to do to get the images they wanted.

Award Ceremony

Well I was slacking and didn't take any photos durring the awards ceremony at The Corcoran last night. The ceremony was fun though, not the normal boring reading of names. My parents also made the trip down from Philadelphia, even though I neglected to tell them about the ceremony until the night before.

I'm surprised and honored that I was selected for an award. I think receiving it, along with the critique in class tonight, and the review of my thesis, made me realize that I'm comfortable with my abilities as a photographer, but not as confident as I should be. I think I need to be more confident in doing things with and through my photography.

I know, Susan, I still suck.

The One That Got Away

This is where the engineering dork in me shines through.
Lufthansa Airlines was making a proving run of a new Airbus A380 into Dulles, Monday evening. The A380 is the largest passenger plane ever built, and they wanted to make sure the ground crews would be able to handle a plane that can carry 555 people.

My dilemma came on finding a way to view, and hopefully photograph, the plane while it was in the area. I called the media people at Dulles to find out if i could gain media access, or if they could tell me when it would be taking off or landing. Lufthansa was hading the media, and I was to late to get a spot with them. The plane would also be landing and taking off at night, in the dark.

I never did see the plane.
Instead I leave you all with the wing of a 757.
Maybe next time.

Kirsten Price

Last night Jens and I shot an event supporting the Service Members Legal Defense Network in their work to end the military's policy of don't ask don't tell. It's not a topic I'm very familiar with, but the event was kind of interesting. They had musician Kirsten Price perform a few songs and sign autographs. I'd never heard of her before, but her music was pretty good, and she was fun to take pictures of.

Sally Mann At The Corcoran

The movie What Remains played at The Corcoran last night. It's a documentary about the life and work of Sally Mann. After the film, she and Philip Brookman talked and answered questions.

Sally Mann was one of the photographers that sparked my interest early on in my photographic endeavors. I think a lot of what inspired me about her photography was that it always seemed so natural, even her possed shots never seem stiff.

The questions following the film seemed a little strange to me. not really the questions themselves. But rather watching an in depth documentary about a person, then having them right there in front of the same audience. Everyone in the crowd knew about her, but we're still just a crowd of strangers.
