The main challenge of shooting in the galleries is that the light levels are kept very low to protect the artwork. The conditions give me a welcome excuse to shoot with my fast prime lenses.

The image below is from a gallery talk that coincided with the annual all-senior show. For the talk, a group of about 9 students spoke to gallery visitors about the work that they had in the show. The talk was interesting for me because I had seen and photographed all of the work in the weeks an months leading up to the show, but had never heard anything more about it than what was in the artists statements.

The new layout of the website use a lot of narrow horizonal images, and I've been shooting with that in mind.

The clip below is from the Corcoran's monthly newsletter that has a similar need for long horizontal images. The image is a panorama of the 2010 Corcoran Ball. If you look close you can see the video camera for the Time lapse , clamped on the right side of the second floor railing.

I arrived after the library was closed for the day, so that we could use the stacks for the backdrop. The lighting was a simple two light setup. In the top photo there is a softbox above the camera, and a SB-800 clamped to the shelves above and behind Mario. I also put a reflector below the camera to soften the shadows.

I was extra excited for Jana and Kevin's wedding, because she specifically wanted me to shoot film.

I sometimes shoot 4x5 or other film when I'm covering weddings, in addition to my regular digital coverage. Mostly I do it for my own enjoyment, and often the film images simply blend in to the other black and white images from the day. The film images that do stand out are the 4x5's, because I often mess with the tilt-shift functions of the camera when I'm shooting with it.

I didn't have much time to go into great depths about photography, but my goal for the week was to get them interested in taking pictures. At the begining of the week, it took a little coaxing to get them to shoot even 10 frames. Fortunatly they got the swing of things pretty quick, and were shooting wildly by the end.

Triptych panorama of Luray CavernsLast weekend I drove with Jackie to meet her parents at Luray caverns in Virginia. They were there while traveling along Skyline Drive on a motorcycle for vacation.

I've been carrying a small film camera with a 50mm lens on weekends as a way to separate shooting for work, and shooting for fun. The 50mm F/1.4 lens was great for the low lighting of the cave, but the focal length wasn't great for getting images of the large rock formations. In order to overcome the limits of the lens, I decided to make a panorama in the camera. I shot three images, and tried to line them up so when the film was viewed un-cut it would read like a panorama. I didn't line up the frames exactly, but overall I think the effect worked well.

During each storm (after I unplug all my hard drives and other photo equipment) I set up a my camera on a windowsill to capture photos of the lightning. The way our apartment is situated in the building, we have a limited view of the skyline. We could see the flash from lots of lightning strikes, but most of the lighting bolts themselves were obscured by buildings.

Chuck Close recently spoke about his life and work, and was one of the artists that was the easiest for me to relate. When most artists talk about their early careers they may hint at struggles or lean years, but never really delve into specific challenges they faced. Mr. Close spoke candidly about the challenges he faced both in life and art that helped to form him as the artist he is. One of the large reasons he was speaking so candidly is that he was being interviewed by his friend and biographer, Christopher Finch. Mr. Finch knows Chuck's history and was able to develop the conversation to reveal the history of Mr. Close's life and work, the same way he would in a printed book.

It was great to be able to work with Jackie, and cover both the Bride and Groom's perspective of the day fully.

The portrait below is of Brittany, a recent graduate from the Interior Design masters program. Brittany was very helpful in finding a location that would fit well for her portrait. After letting her know what I had in mind for the portrait, she suggested a residence for which she had recently created some work. I had previously met the owner at a few Corcoran events, and he was gracious enough to let us use his beautiful house as a backdrop.

Because we were shooting in a person's home, I kept the setup minimal. I didn't want to be running cables everywhere, and have lighstands littering the living room. I used single battery powered monolight in a medium softbox.

All the great artwork and open areas always make the exhibition spaces the top of my list for portrait locations, and I almost never get to use them. There are a variety of reasons why I'm never allowed to set up portraits in the gallery space. I'm sure disrupting visitors, and setting up studio strobes next to priceless works of art are two big reasons right at the top of the list. The upside to this limitation is that I have been forced to find places that I normally wouldn't use for portraits.

The below picture was shot outside the director's office on the first floor of The Corcoran. Half the room is used as an office, while the rest is filled with books from the director Paul Greenhalgh's personal collection. If I had not been forced to find an un-occupied space, I probably would have completely overlooked this room. Not because I dislike the room, but because it is simply a place I don't often have a reason to go.

For this year's ceremonies I shot video and ran a web cast along with my regular photography coverage. Getting everything to work together took way more planning and prep than I had originally anticipated, but was well worth it in the end.

This years graduation speaker was James Rosenquist, I want to be just like him when I'm old.

I met Erin a few years ago at The Corcoran, and she contacted me about photographing her wedding after she was a guest at another wedding I photographed. Erin and Ryan were great to photograph because they were very natural around my camera, and I think they had a great time with each other at their wedding.
